The 49ers robbed the room for Fitzgerald. Final grade: B-. The 49ers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Ryan Fitzgerald fell into the Round 7 slot. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Reaching for Sheppard left real value on the table behind him. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a workhorse for the backfield, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick49
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
They barely believed it either: Jalon Walker still on the board at the 49th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick75
Rnd3
Harold Fannin Jr.
You do not let a tight end like Harold Fannin Jr. reach No. 75 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick99
Rnd3
Savion Williams
They went early on Savion Williams in pick 99, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick111
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Circle this one: Jake Majors at pick No. 111 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick137
Rnd4
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman in the 137th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick152
Rnd5
Barrett Carter
Somehow Barrett Carter was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick185
Rnd6
Rod Moore
Steal is underselling it; Rod Moore at slot 185 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick226
Rnd7
Kyle Monangai
The board fumbled Kyle Monangai all the way to the 226th overall pick, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick230
Rnd7
Will Sheppard
This one needs a full-page explanation: Will Sheppard in Round 7, Pick 14, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick249
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
Shilo Sanders at No. 249 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick255
Rnd7
Ryan Fitzgerald
Ryan Fitzgerald at slot 255 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
