Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueC NeedB TradesA FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the 49ers.

There is reaching, and then there is Trey Moore at No. 167. The 49ers jumped the board by 49 and dared it to prove them wrong.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. Ponds falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick56 Rnd2 Caleb Lomu
Caleb Lomu in Round 2, Pick 24 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick59 Rnd2 Jaeden Roberts
They liked Jaeden Roberts enough to skip the value, taking him in the 59th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick64 Rnd2 Parker Brailsford
A wild overpay on Parker Brailsford in the 64th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick91 Rnd3 Adepoju Adebawore
A reach on Adepoju Adebawore in slot 91; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick92 Rnd3 Oscar Delp
They paid a round early for Oscar Delp in pick No. 92, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick131 Rnd4 Barion Brown
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Barion Brown. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick132 Rnd4 Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa at No. 132 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick134 Rnd4 Xavier Scott
No drama and no debate, Xavier Scott went about where he belonged in the 134th pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick137 Rnd4 Jaishawn Barham
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaishawn Barham in the Round 4 slot, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick167 Rnd5 Trey Moore
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trey Moore this early at pick 167. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick174 Rnd5 Fernando Carmona
They jumped the gun on Fernando Carmona, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick177 Rnd6 Riley Mahlman
Riley Mahlman at Round 6, Pick 1 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick206 Rnd6 Ja'Keem Jackson
Ja'Keem Jackson is a better player than pick No. 206 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick209 Rnd6 D'Angelo Ponds
Value with a capital V on D'Angelo Ponds in the 209th overall pick, a genuine coup. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick222 Rnd7 Jordan Hall
They talked themselves into Jordan Hall at the 222nd overall pick, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick240 Rnd7 TJ Ferguson
Value said wait; TJ Ferguson in Round 7, Pick 24 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick241 Rnd7 Eric Gentry
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Eric Gentry well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
