Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
B+
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Browns a B+. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Browns reached some 33 spots for Addison West, and value like that does not grow back. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Spending an early pick on linebacker with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kenneth Grant in the 33rd overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick34
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
Emeka Egbuka in pick No. 34 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in Jihaad Campbell. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick65
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
They jumped the gun on Mason Taylor, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
Pick67
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
A straight-up fair deal on Elic Ayomanor at slot 67, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick81
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They paid sticker price for Deone Walker in Round 3, Pick 17, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick93
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
They let Andrew Mukuba come to them and pounced at No. 93. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick94
Rnd3
Charles Grant
Charles Grant at the Round 3 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick97
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
By-the-book stuff, Zy Alexander at the 97th pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick99
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
Tez Johnson at the 99th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick104
Rnd4
Jake Majors
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jake Majors in slot 104, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick105
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots to take Smael Mondon Jr., a linebacker that was not the priority.
Pick119
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
Good price on Denzel Burke in pick 119, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick154
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
They took Andres Borregales at par in pick No. 154, which is nothing to complain about. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick179
Rnd6
Addison West
Addison West at the 179th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick256
Rnd7
Xzavier Henderson
Xzavier Henderson at pick 256 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
