The 49ers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent slot 252 on Jalen Travis, a name the board had a full 41 spots lower.
Watts at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Josh Simmons
In No. 12 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
Will Johnson
Will Johnson at pick No. 43 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick75
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Xavier Watts in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
No edge and no loss on Jared Wilson in pick 100; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips in the 113th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138
Rnd4
Tyler Baron
A real head-scratcher, Tyler Baron in slot 138 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick147
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
Nothing to complain about; Malachi Moore went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser in the 160th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick227
Rnd7
Ahmed Hassanein
A wild overpay on Ahmed Hassanein in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick249
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
Hayden Conner in No. 249 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jalen Travis
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jalen Travis. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
