Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueC NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a D-.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the 49ers started one anyway for Aaron Lewis, 48 picks ahead of schedule.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. The Hicks value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 Taliese Fuaga
In slot 5 they get an anchor for the offensive line, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
They paid up for Cooper Beebe at Round 2, Pick 31 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick69 Rnd3 Graham Barton
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 69 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94 Rnd3 Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson is a better player than pick 94 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick98 Rnd3 Cedric Gray
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cedric Gray well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick132 Rnd4 Jaden Hicks
They barely believed it either: Jaden Hicks still on the board at the 132nd pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick176 Rnd6 Roger Rosengarten
They paid sticker price for Roger Rosengarten in the 176th pick, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick209 Rnd6 Daequan Hardy
A conviction pick on Daequan Hardy at the 209th overall pick that the board grades a round light. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick214 Rnd6 Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas in pick 214 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick215 Rnd6 David Ugwoegbu
Value said wait; David Ugwoegbu in pick No. 215 says they were not listening. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick249 Rnd7 Aaron Lewis
They reached a country mile for Aaron Lewis at No. 249, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
