The Bears found their guy under center in Williams: A-. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Bears spent their marquee pick on Caleb Williams, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Culp has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
The Bears clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
No edge and no loss on Caleb Williams in No. 1; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Pick49
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at the 49th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick72
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in pick No. 72 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
They paid up for Sedrick Van Pran at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick87
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni in pick 87 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick111
Rnd4
Maason Smith
Maason Smith in slot 111 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick117
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
They let Zak Zinter come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 17. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick122
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Johnny Wilson at the 122nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick134
Rnd4
Bucky Irving
Bucky Irving in pick 134 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick185
Rnd6
Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki at Round 6, Pick 10 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick216
Rnd6
Tyrice Knight
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyrice Knight in pick No. 216. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick257
Rnd7
Devin Culp
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Devin Culp. It adds depth where they could use a little.
