The Bears did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. Nobody had Alex Birchmeier this high, and it is not close. The Bears reached 30 spots to get him at the 245th overall pick.
It is not that Kilgore is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. Wheatley at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
David Bailey
In the 28th overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick59
Rnd2
Malik Muhammad
By-the-book stuff, Malik Muhammad at the 59th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick90
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields at slot 90 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick105
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
The board fumbled Zakee Wheatley all the way to No. 105, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick129
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jalon Kilgore at safety with interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots open.
Pick167
Rnd5
Isaac Smith
Nothing to complain about; Isaac Smith went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick239
Rnd7
Luke Altmyer
They let Luke Altmyer come to them and pounced at pick 239. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick245
Rnd7
Alex Birchmeier
They talked themselves into Alex Birchmeier at No. 245, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick257
Rnd7
Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona at slot 257 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
