The Bears drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: A-. The search is over. The Bears handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
Reaching for Barner left real value on the table behind him. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The Barner pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with linebacker still on the board.
They will regret leaving linebacker for another day if the season turns on it.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In the 22nd overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In the 27th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick35
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Troy Franklin at Round 2, Pick 3 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The roster fit checks out.
Pick36
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
The board had cheaper options than Kris Jenkins at pick 36, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick53
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
A clean, defensible pick in slot 53 with a little surplus value in T.J. Tampa. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick66
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
A reach on Michael Hall Jr. in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Blake Corum
They left a pile of value on the table to take Blake Corum this early at pick No. 67. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
They went early on Khyree Jackson in No. 75, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick96
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
A conviction pick on Zak Zinter at the 96th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick111
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
Value said wait; Theo Johnson in the Round 4 slot says they were not listening. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick115
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
They did well to land Braelon Allen in the 115th pick, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick117
Rnd4
AJ Barner
A curious use of No. 117. Linebacker needed the pick; a tight end in AJ Barner did not.
Pick123
Rnd4
Beaux Limmer
Beaux Limmer in Round 4, Pick 23 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick143
Rnd5
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at pick 143 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
