Good, not great, for the Cowboys: B-. Nobody else had Dont'e Thornton Jr. anywhere near slot 149. The Cowboys did, by 36 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
That linebacker hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Landing West that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In No. 12 they get a lead back with juice, outstanding value to boot.
Pick44
Rnd2
Trey Amos
Trey Amos in the 44th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick95
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba slipping to slot 95 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick149
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
A reach on Jack Nelson in Round 5, Pick 36; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick204
Rnd6
CJ West
A tidy bit of business in pick 204, where CJ West graded well above the range. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick211
Rnd6
Tahj Brooks
Tahj Brooks slid further than he should have, and pick No. 211 is lovely value for the running back. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick217
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
They reached a country mile for Jermari Harris at the 217th overall pick, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick239
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
By-the-book stuff, Isaac TeSlaa at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
