Draft Grade — Commanders

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Commanders to a C+.

The phones were a trap the Commanders kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.

Reaching for Conner left real value on the table behind him. They banked enough surplus on Watts to cover a lot of smaller sins.

They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.

It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Matthew Golden
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a No. 1 receiver, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick61 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 61 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick71 Rnd3 Darien Porter
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at No. 71, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick99 Rnd3 Anthony Belton
A reach for Anthony Belton in the Round 3 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick128 Rnd4 Brashard Smith
A conviction pick on Brashard Smith at pick 128 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick205 Rnd6 Tahj Brooks
A tidy little value on Tahj Brooks in the 205th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick245 Rnd7 Hayden Conner
Hayden Conner in the 245th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
