Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall

FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B-. The Patrick Payton pick is the one that will follow the Patriots into the fall. They took him 60 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety. The Caldwell pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Malachi Lawrence
In pick 31 they get a problem off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Gabe Jacas
Gabe Jacas at the 63rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick95
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
Malachi Fields is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick125
Rnd4
Jude Bowry
No edge and no loss on Jude Bowry in No. 125; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jaeden Roberts
Jaeden Roberts at slot 131 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171
Rnd5
Tanner Koziol
Good price on Tanner Koziol in Round 5, Pick 31, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick191
Rnd6
Zane Durant
Nothing to complain about; Zane Durant went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick198
Rnd6
Patrick Payton
They talked themselves into Patrick Payton at slot 198, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick202
Rnd6
Aiden Fisher
They reached a country mile for Aiden Fisher at pick 202, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick212
Rnd6
Jeff Caldwell
The board fumbled Jeff Caldwell all the way to the 212th pick, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247
Rnd7
Andre Fuller
Andre Fuller at No. 247 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
