Arcadiuz DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B-. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Patrick Payton at the 198th overall pick, roughly 60 spots before his name belonged. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
However the rest shakes out, Caldwell at that price is a win they earned. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Jordyn Tyson
In pick 31 they get a No. 1 receiver, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63
Rnd2
Anthony Lucas
Anthony Lucas at slot 63 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jude Bowry
They talked themselves into Jude Bowry at pick No. 95, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick125
Rnd4
Michael Trigg
A quiet steal in the 125th pick: Michael Trigg for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick131
Rnd4
Dametrious Crownover
They liked Dametrious Crownover enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 131. The roster fit checks out.
Pick171
Rnd5
Louis Moore
A straight-up fair deal on Louis Moore at Round 5, Pick 31, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick191
Rnd6
David Gusta
David Gusta in pick No. 191 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick198
Rnd6
Patrick Payton
They left a pile of value on the table to take Patrick Payton this early at No. 198. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick202
Rnd6
Jimmy Rolder
A real head-scratcher, Jimmy Rolder in the 202nd pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick212
Rnd6
Jeff Caldwell
Steal is underselling it; Jeff Caldwell at the 212th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247
Rnd7
Andre Fuller
Andre Fuller in Round 7, Pick 31 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor need, but a need all the same.
