Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB+ NeedB TradesA- FutureA
The Patriots let Felton fall into their laps, and walked away with a B+.

You build a draft on nights like this. Tai Felton had no business being available in No. 144, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.

The cost of the Allen reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In the 17th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Josh Simmons
They will replay Josh Simmons at pick No. 38 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick59 Rnd2 JT Tuimoloau
Nice patience on JT Tuimoloau, who had no business lasting to pick 59. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick69 Rnd3 Landon Jackson
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Landon Jackson in Round 3, Pick 5, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick77 Rnd3 Darien Porter
No edge and no loss on Darien Porter in No. 77; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick81 Rnd3 Marcus Mbow
Taking Marcus Mbow in slot 81 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Pick91 Rnd3 Chris Paul Jr.
The board had Chris Paul Jr. higher than the 91st overall pick, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick106 Rnd4 LeQuint Allen
LeQuint Allen in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick129 Rnd4 Bhayshul Tuten
A wild overpay on Bhayshul Tuten in pick No. 129, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick144 Rnd5 Tai Felton
Tai Felton at the 144th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick164 Rnd5 Pat Bryant
Pat Bryant slid further than he should have, and the 164th overall pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick220 Rnd7 Connor Colby
You do not let an offensive lineman like Connor Colby reach Round 7, Pick 4 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
