FutureA
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Patriots a A-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Gino Garcia at the 242nd overall pick is 62 spots clear of where he belonged. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Marks. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Tyler Warren and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
No edge and no loss on Tyler Warren in the Round 1 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick38
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
Jonah Savaiinaea in Round 2, Pick 6 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick49
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau at pick 49 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick69
Rnd3
Wyatt Milum
A clean, defensible pick in slot 69 with a little surplus value in Wyatt Milum. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick77
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at the 77th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick81
Rnd3
Darien Porter
A reasonable price with a little left over, Darien Porter in pick No. 81. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick106
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton in the 106th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick144
Rnd5
Quincy Riley
No drama and no debate, Quincy Riley went about where he belonged in slot 144. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick171
Rnd5
DJ Giddens
They paid sticker price for DJ Giddens in the 171st pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick220
Rnd7
Woody Marks
You do not let a running back like Woody Marks reach No. 220 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick238
Rnd7
Elijhah Badger
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Elijhah Badger well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick242
Rnd7
Gino Garcia
Gino Garcia in pick No. 242 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
