Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-.

It is the swing that defines the weekend: Solomon Tuliaupupu in the 125th pick, a good 161 spots before the room expected him. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. It is not that Ponds is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first.

They banked enough surplus on Abney II to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick Analysis
Pick35 Rnd2 Kayden McDonald
A tidy little value on Kayden McDonald in the 35th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick57 Rnd2 Brian Parker II
They paid up for Brian Parker II at No. 57 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick89 Rnd3 Keith Abney II
Keith Abney II in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick96 Rnd3 Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling in pick No. 96 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick105 Rnd4 D'Angelo Ponds
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 105 on D'Angelo Ponds with running back, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Pick125 Rnd4 Solomon Tuliaupupu
A real head-scratcher, Solomon Tuliaupupu in the 125th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick129 Rnd4 Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance at No. 129 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick172 Rnd5 Lee Hunter
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Lee Hunter. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
