Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
D
ValueB
NeedA-
TradesF
FutureB-
The Cardinals bet the future on Williams. The board says D. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cardinals would have aced it. Zion Nelson at slot 198 is 59 spots clear of where he belonged. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
By-the-book stuff, Caleb Williams at the 1st pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick21
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In pick No. 21 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick34
Rnd2
Jared Verse
Jared Verse slid further than he should have, and slot 34 is lovely value for the edge rusher. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick66
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Sedrick Van Pran. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick70
Rnd3
Dontay Corleone
Dontay Corleone at Round 3, Pick 6 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick85
Rnd3
Amarius Mims
Amarius Mims at the 85th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick102
Rnd4
Bucky Irving
They paid sticker price for Bucky Irving in Round 4, Pick 2, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
No edge and no loss on Jamon Dumas-Johnson in pick No. 133; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick139
Rnd5
Fabien Lovett
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Fabien Lovett well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
Pick169
Rnd5
Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott in slot 169 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick198
Rnd6
Zion Nelson
A big swing on Zion Nelson at the 198th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick223
Rnd7
Ben Bywater
Ben Bywater at pick 223 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick226
Rnd7
Dwight McGlothern
The board had cheaper options than Dwight McGlothern at the 226th pick, and it noticed. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
