Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureB
The phones sank the Texans this weekend: D-. The Texans lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
The Foster reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The Stover pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and tight end.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Bertrand pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Xavier Worthy
In the 32nd pick they get a go-to option on the outside, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick58
Rnd2
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick 58 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick63
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat at slot 63 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick87
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe slid further than he should have, and the 87th overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick90
Rnd3
Cade Stover
A curious use of Round 3, Pick 27. Edge rusher and tight end needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
Pick95
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III in pick No. 95 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick97
Rnd3
Kris Abrams-Draine
A real head-scratcher, Kris Abrams-Draine in No. 97 is miles ahead of his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick99
Rnd3
Javon Foster
Javon Foster at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick123
Rnd4
James Williams
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on James Williams. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick126
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick137
Rnd5
Jordan Travis
Jordan Travis in No. 137 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jaylin Simpson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaylin Simpson at the 163rd overall pick. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick207
Rnd6
JD Bertrand
They robbed the room for JD Bertrand here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick239
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
A tidy bit of business in pick 239, where Joshua Cephus graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
The board had Eric Gentry higher than the 247th pick, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
