Draft Grade — Saints
Overall
B
ValueB+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Saints robbed the room for Helm. Final grade: B. The rest of the league will want that one back. Gunnar Helm tumbling to the Saints in No. 129 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The back end got a real overhaul.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Will Johnson
They took Will Johnson at par in No. 9, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick40
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
A safety of that caliber at the 40th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick71
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge in slot 71 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick93
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They will replay Deone Walker at the 93rd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Pick110
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
You do not let a running back like TreVeyon Henderson reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick129
Rnd4
Gunnar Helm
The board fumbled Gunnar Helm all the way to Round 4, Pick 28, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
