Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesC FutureB-
The jury is out on the 49ers. For now, C+.

The Eli Cox selection is the head-turner. The 49ers reached 78 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.

Pick Analysis
Pick15 Rnd1 Shemar Stewart
In the 15th overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick31 Rnd1 Derrick Harmon
In No. 31 they get an anchor for the defensive front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick100 Rnd3 Cody Simon
Cody Simon in slot 100 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick112 Rnd4 Billy Bowman Jr.
Billy Bowman Jr. in Round 4, Pick 10 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick113 Rnd4 Savion Williams
They will replay Savion Williams at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138 Rnd4 Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at pick 138 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick147 Rnd5 Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson at the 147th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick154 Rnd5 Logan Brown
Logan Brown at slot 154 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick160 Rnd5 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at Round 5, Pick 22 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick184 Rnd6 Caleb Rogers
Caleb Rogers at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick218 Rnd7 KeAndre Lambert-Smith
You do not let a wide receiver like KeAndre Lambert-Smith reach pick No. 218 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick219 Rnd7 Jarquez Hunter
The board fumbled Jarquez Hunter all the way to the 219th pick, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick227 Rnd7 Desmond Watson
A conviction pick on Desmond Watson at pick 227 that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick242 Rnd7 Bilhal Kone
No drama and no debate, Bilhal Kone went about where he belonged in No. 242. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick246 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
A reach for Teddye Buchanan in the 246th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Pick251 Rnd7 Cam Horsley
They took Cam Horsley at par in the 251st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick252 Rnd7 CJ Dippre
They paid sticker price for CJ Dippre in No. 252, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick257 Rnd7 Eli Cox
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Eli Cox well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
