Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C+
ValueC- NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
A mixed bag for the 49ers, and a C+ to match.

Nobody had Fernando Carmona this high, and it is not close. The 49ers reached 50 spots to get him at pick No. 128.

However the rest shakes out, Key at that price is a win they earned. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.

If Jermod McCoy and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Jermod McCoy
Jermod McCoy in slot 28 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick60 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman in pick 60 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick92 Rnd3 Jaeden Roberts
A real head-scratcher, Jaeden Roberts in Round 3, Pick 28 is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick128 Rnd4 Fernando Carmona
A big swing on Fernando Carmona at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick134 Rnd4 Jonah Coleman
Jonah Coleman in No. 134 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick137 Rnd4 Haynes King
Steal is underselling it; Haynes King at pick No. 137 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick167 Rnd5 Jaishawn Barham
They read the board right and Jaishawn Barham was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 29. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick174 Rnd5 Dane Key
Dane Key in the 174th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick206 Rnd6 Dasan McCullough
Taking Dasan McCullough in pick No. 206 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick241 Rnd7 Blake Shapen
Blake Shapen at pick 241 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
