Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureC
The Patriots let Trapilo fall and pounced. Final grade: B+.

The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Ozzy Trapilo fell into pick No. 128. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They are betting Mbow proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 James Pearce Jr.
In No. 8 they get a problem off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Marcus Mbow
A reach on Marcus Mbow in the 38th pick; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick74 Rnd3 Zy Alexander
They paid sticker price for Zy Alexander in pick No. 74, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick105 Rnd4 Andrew Mukuba
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Andrew Mukuba in Round 4, Pick 4, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick128 Rnd4 Ozzy Trapilo
Taking Ozzy Trapilo in slot 128 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick136 Rnd4 Kalel Mullings
They barely believed it either: Kalel Mullings still on the board at pick 136. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick219 Rnd7 Jack Kiser
A linebacker of that caliber at the 219th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
