FutureA
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it. The 49ers torched the value chart for Teddye Buchanan, taking him 98 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Edwards falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In pick No. 20 they get a load in the middle. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick53
Rnd2
Jordan Burch
Jordan Burch in pick 53 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Charles Grant
They paid a round early for Charles Grant in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick84
Rnd3
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at No. 84 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick100
Rnd3
Chimere Dike
They paid sticker price for Chimere Dike in slot 100, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jacob Parrish
They went early on Jacob Parrish in the 113th pick, and the value did not follow. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick138
Rnd4
Elijah Roberts
A big swing on Elijah Roberts at the 138th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick149
Rnd5
Luke Lachey
They reached into another round for Luke Lachey, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick160
Rnd5
Teddye Buchanan
This one needs a full-page explanation: Teddye Buchanan in pick 160, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick227
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
Steal is underselling it; Donovan Edwards at the 227th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick239
Rnd7
Carson Vinson
A tidy little value on Carson Vinson in the Round 7 slot, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick249
Rnd7
Cam Horsley
Cam Horsley in No. 249 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick252
Rnd7
Andrew Armstrong
They left a pile of value on the table to take Andrew Armstrong this early at slot 252. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
