Penix Jr. is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a D.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Bears took Sedrick Van Pran at pick 51, roughly 38 spots before his name belonged. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They have staked the next five years on Michael Penix Jr., which is the only story that really matters here.

It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. Dial falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
