The Bears bet the future on Williams. The board says D-.

The Bears did not so much draft AJ Barner as overpay for him, 39 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.

Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Spending an early pick on tight end with cornerback and linebacker open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The Benson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
