Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall

FutureB-
The Chargers let Fitzgerald fall and pounced. Final grade: B-. The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Ryan Fitzgerald, pick No. 214, roughly 51 picks past where he belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Reaching for Baron left real value on the table behind him. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In the 22nd overall pick they get an anchor for the defensive front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick55
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
By-the-book stuff, Alfred Collins at the 55th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick86
Rnd3
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor is a better player than pick No. 86 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick125
Rnd4
Tyler Baron
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tyler Baron this early at slot 125. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick158
Rnd5
LeQuint Allen
Circle this one: LeQuint Allen at No. 158 is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick181
Rnd6
Jason Marshall Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Jason Marshall Jr. in pick 181 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick199
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins in the Round 6 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick209
Rnd6
Antwane Wells Jr.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Antwane Wells Jr. at Round 6, Pick 33. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick214
Rnd6
Ryan Fitzgerald
Steal is underselling it; Ryan Fitzgerald at the 214th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick256
Rnd7
Jeremy Crawshaw
Good price on Jeremy Crawshaw in the Round 7 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
