Pj DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Picks Received
Draft Picks Traded
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
C
ValueF
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureD
A masterclass at the trade table lands the 49ers a C. The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Seth McGowan, taking him 369 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. A weekend of give and take that grades a C.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That Leonard pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Jonah Savaiinaea
In the 11th overall pick they get protection for the quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Kevin Winston Jr.
A wild overpay on Kevin Winston Jr. in slot 39, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick43
Rnd2
Seth McGowan
They talked themselves into Seth McGowan at pick No. 43, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger in Round 3, Pick 11 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick100
Rnd3
Antwane Wells Jr.
Antwane Wells Jr. at the 100th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick113
Rnd4
JJ Pegues
A big swing on JJ Pegues at pick 113, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jackson Hawes
Jackson Hawes at Round 4, Pick 36 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick147
Rnd5
Riley Leonard
Riley Leonard in pick 147 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick160
Rnd5
Ryan Fitzgerald
Ryan Fitzgerald at slot 160 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jimmy Horn Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jimmy Horn Jr. in pick No. 249, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick252
Rnd7
Shaun Dolac
They left a pile of value on the table to take Shaun Dolac this early at the Round 7 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
