Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent the 13th overall pick on J.J. McCarthy, a name the board had a full 33 spots lower. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Jones at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
