Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall C
ValueB- NeedA- TradesF FutureC
The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the C.

The war room fell hard for Thomas Fidone II, and it showed at No. 255: 119 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. For now it grades a C, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.

However the rest shakes out, Thornton Jr. at that price is a win they earned. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In the 8th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 T.J. Sanders
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T.J. Sanders. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75 Rnd3 Jalen Royals
Jalen Royals slid further than he should have, and the 75th overall pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick99 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson slipping to slot 99 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick112 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138 Rnd4 Cam Skattebo
They robbed the room for Cam Skattebo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick139 Rnd4 Tommi Hill
They did well to land Tommi Hill in pick 139, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick189 Rnd6 Hayden Conner
A big swing on Hayden Conner at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick228 Rnd7 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They will replay Dont'e Thornton Jr. at slot 228 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick232 Rnd7 Barryn Sorrell
Barryn Sorrell at pick No. 232 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick255 Rnd7 Thomas Fidone II
They reached a country mile for Thomas Fidone II at the 255th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
