The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: C. If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Thomas Fidone II at the Round 7 slot is 99 spots clear of where he belonged. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C.
The Williams steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
So much rides on Josh Simmons that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Josh Simmons
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
Matthew Golden
No edge and no loss on Matthew Golden in the 43rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick61
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in No. 61 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick79
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
They paid sticker price for Maxwell Hairston in slot 79, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick99
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson slipping to pick 99 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Jared Wilson at the 112th pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138
Rnd4
Ajani Cornelius
Circle this one: Ajani Cornelius at pick 138 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick139
Rnd4
Kobe King
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kobe King in slot 139. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick189
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II at the 189th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick228
Rnd7
Kyle Williams
You do not let a wide receiver like Kyle Williams reach Round 7, Pick 10 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick232
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
R.J. Mickens in pick No. 232 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick255
Rnd7
Thomas Fidone II
Thomas Fidone II at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
