The_Kold DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. The 49ers spent real capital to be 100 picks early on Thomas Fidone II, and the board is going to hold them to it. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The Horton pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Luther Burden III
In the 11th overall pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
Jonah Savaiinaea in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
They will replay Alfred Collins at No. 75 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick99
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Nice patience on Ozzy Trapilo, who had no business lasting to the 99th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick112
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jared Wilson. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Tommi Hill
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tommi Hill in Round 4, Pick 37. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick139
Rnd4
Kobe King
Nothing to complain about; Kobe King went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick148
Rnd5
Tory Horton
Taking Tory Horton in the 148th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick189
Rnd6
Ollie Gordon II
A running back of that caliber at slot 189 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick228
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
R.J. Mickens at Round 7, Pick 10 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick232
Rnd7
Cody Lindenberg
They paid a round early for Cody Lindenberg in the Round 7 slot, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
Pick255
Rnd7
Thomas Fidone II
Thomas Fidone II in the 255th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
