Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesA- FutureB-
Good, not great, for the 49ers: B.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent No. 249 on Xavier Truss, a name most had 42 spots down the list.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Moore.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
In the 23rd pick they get a disruptive interior force. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Booker at pick No. 33 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick43 Rnd2 Benjamin Morrison
No edge and no loss on Benjamin Morrison in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick67 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
They paid sticker price for Carson Schwesinger in pick 67, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick87 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
Good price on Ozzy Trapilo in Round 3, Pick 23, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100 Rnd3 David Walker
They jumped the gun on David Walker, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick113 Rnd4 Chimere Dike
Chimere Dike slipping to the 113th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jake Majors
Fair-plus on Jake Majors, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick147 Rnd5 Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at the 147th overall pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick160 Rnd5 Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten at pick No. 160 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick179 Rnd6 JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at Round 6, Pick 3 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick227 Rnd7 Thomas Fidone II
A wild overpay on Thomas Fidone II in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick249 Rnd7 Xavier Truss
This one needs a full-page explanation: Xavier Truss in slot 249, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick252 Rnd7 Cody Lindenberg
A straight-up fair deal on Cody Lindenberg at pick 252, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
