The 49ers landed square in the muddy middle: C+. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the 49ers started one anyway for Sai'vion Jones, 29 picks ahead of schedule. It lands right in the middle: a C+, no more, no less.
The Brooks pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Hit on Kenneth Grant and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Value with a capital V on Kenneth Grant in pick 33, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick43
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks slid further than he should have, and Round 2, Pick 11 is lovely value for the safety. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick67
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
Nothing to complain about; Cameron Williams went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander in the 94th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jared Wilson. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick113
Rnd4
Sai'vion Jones
Sai'vion Jones at slot 113 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick138
Rnd4
Hollin Pierce
By-the-book stuff, Hollin Pierce at Round 4, Pick 36 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick147
Rnd5
Nick Nash
They took Nick Nash at par in the 147th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick160
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
Willie Lampkin in pick No. 160 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick227
Rnd7
Thomas Fidone II
They reached a country mile for Thomas Fidone II at the 227th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick249
Rnd7
Cody Lindenberg
Cody Lindenberg in pick 249 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick252
Rnd7
Ja'Corey Brooks
Ja'Corey Brooks in the Round 7 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
