Draft Grade — Bears

FutureA
The Bears won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: A-. Nobody had Davin Vann this high, and it is not close. The Bears reached 46 spots to get him at slot 232. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
Landing Lambert-Smith that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The Bears indulged a want in Loveland while a need in interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots stayed open.
Bottom line, with Tyler Warren leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In No. 30 they get a red-zone target to build around at a price that makes it sweeter.
Pick39
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau at pick No. 39 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick44
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Colston Loveland adds a tight end and leaves interior defensive lineman, linebacker and other spots untouched.
Pick45
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
Emeka Egbuka slipping to Round 2, Pick 13 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick72
Rnd3
Quinshon Judkins
Fair-plus on Quinshon Judkins, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick109
Rnd4
Charles Grant
Circle this one: Charles Grant at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick148
Rnd5
Trevor Etienne
They paid sticker price for Trevor Etienne in the 148th overall pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
Tyler Batty at the 211th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick232
Rnd7
Davin Vann
Davin Vann at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick233
Rnd7
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
KeAndre Lambert-Smith at pick 233 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick239
Rnd7
Luke Lachey
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Luke Lachey in slot 239, plain and simple. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick240
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
Jermari Harris at pick No. 240 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
