Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureC
The Texans let Cowing fall into their laps, and walked away with a D-. The Texans lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
Landing Cowing that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman and quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The Smith reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick 24 they get a home-run threat at receiver, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27
Rnd1
Ja'Tavion Sanders
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a red-zone target to build around at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Taliese Fuaga
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Taliese Fuaga at the Round 2 slot is the proof. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick42
Rnd2
Nate Wiggins
Nate Wiggins at the 42nd overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick43
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe in No. 43 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick53
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
They paid sticker price for Jonathon Brooks in pick No. 53, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick54
Rnd2
Maason Smith
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman and quarterback open.
Pick90
Rnd3
Junior Colson
They reached a country mile for Junior Colson at the 90th pick, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick95
Rnd3
James Williams
A swing that ignored the value entirely, James Williams well ahead of where he belonged. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick110
Rnd4
Marshawn Kneeland
Marshawn Kneeland at No. 110 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick121
Rnd4
Jalen McMillan
Jalen McMillan slipping to the 121st overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jaylin Simpson
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman and quarterback still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 24 on Jaylin Simpson, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick158
Rnd5
Lathan Ransom
They took Lathan Ransom at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick240
Rnd7
Rasheen Ali
Nice patience on Rasheen Ali, who had no business lasting to slot 240. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick242
Rnd7
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing in pick No. 242 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
