The Patriots lost the trade table, and the D+ tells the story. Nobody had Donovan Smith this high, and it is not close. The Patriots reached 32 spots to get him at the 238th pick. Put together, it is a D+.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They banked enough surplus on Neal to cover a lot of smaller sins.
The veteran additions, Mike Hilton chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
