Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall D+
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureA+
A passer of the future in Daniels, and a D+, for the Commanders.

The phones were a trap the Commanders kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.

Jayden Daniels is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The Harrell reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

Smith at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 Jayden Daniels
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick40 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Guyton. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick67 Rnd3 Ja'Tavion Sanders
Value with a capital V on Ja'Tavion Sanders in the 67th overall pick, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick95 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
A conviction pick on Khyree Jackson at pick 95 that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick100 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in the 100th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick123 Rnd4 MarShawn Lloyd
They took MarShawn Lloyd at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick127 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 127 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick133 Rnd4 Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith slid further than he should have, and slot 133 is lovely value for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick141 Rnd5 Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent at pick No. 141 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick145 Rnd5 Malik Mustapha
A reasonable price with a little left over, Malik Mustapha in slot 145. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick181 Rnd6 Jaylen Harrell
Jaylen Harrell in No. 181 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick223 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
A reach for Joshua Cephus in Round 7, Pick 3; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
