Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B-
ValueB+ NeedB TradesD FutureB-
The Steelers robbed the room for Coleman. Final grade: B-.

You could see the war room lean forward. Keon Coleman at Round 4, Pick 19 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.

The Capehart reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while edge rusher, running back and other spots went begging.

The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick32 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In pick 32 they get an anchor for the offensive line, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick52 Rnd2 Byron Murphy II
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Byron Murphy II at No. 52. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick60 Rnd2 Bo Nix
Bo Nix in the 60th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick61 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Sedrick Van Pran at offensive lineman with edge rusher, running back and other spots open.
Pick64 Rnd2 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
A tidy little value on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in Round 2, Pick 32, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick65 Rnd3 Kalen King
Kalen King at slot 65 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick70 Rnd3 Tyler Nubin
You do not let a safety like Tyler Nubin reach pick No. 70 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick119 Rnd4 Keon Coleman
They barely believed it either: Keon Coleman still on the board at the 119th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick120 Rnd4 Javon Bullard
A safety of that caliber at pick 120 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick174 Rnd5 Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
Taking Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in slot 174 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick198 Rnd6 DeMonte Capehart
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DeMonte Capehart well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick241 Rnd7 Daequan Hardy
They let Daequan Hardy come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 21. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
