The curious call sets the tone. With offensive lineman and interior defensive lineman still glaring, the Cowboys used slot 122 on Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, a safety they were not exactly short of.

Reaching for Mathews Jr. left real value on the table behind him. They will regret leaving offensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

McNeil-Warren falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
