The Steelers robbed the room for Mitchell. Final grade: B-. The board owed the Steelers one, and it paid up: Quinyon Mitchell, the No. 19 name on the board, sitting there at No. 51 like a gift left on the doorstep.
The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They are betting Smith proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Troy Fautanu
In pick 20 they get a building block for the line. More want than need.
Pick51
Rnd2
Quinyon Mitchell
Quinyon Mitchell at slot 51 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick84
Rnd3
Javon Baker
Javon Baker in No. 84 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick98
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A reach for Maason Smith in the 98th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick119
Rnd4
James Williams
By-the-book stuff, James Williams at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick178
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
They went early on Tanor Bortolini in the 178th pick, and the value did not follow. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick195
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
No edge and no loss on Joe Milton III in Round 6, Pick 20; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
