Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B-

FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Texans. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Texans took Tanner McLachlan a full 34 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Landing James that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick59
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
No drama and no debate, T'Vondre Sweat went about where he belonged in pick 59. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick85
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
A straight-up fair deal on Gabriel Murphy at slot 85, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick124
Rnd4
DJ James
DJ James at the 124th overall pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick128
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
MarShawn Lloyd at the 128th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick161
Rnd5
Renardo Green
They let Renardo Green come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick236
Rnd7
Matthew Jones
They paid up for Matthew Jones at the 236th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick245
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan in pick No. 245 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
