The Patriots got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent pick No. 144 on R.J. Mickens, a name the board had a full 68 spots lower. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They banked enough surplus on Higgins to cover a lot of smaller sins.

They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Abdul Carter
In slot 4 they get a problem off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick18 Rnd1 Will Campbell
In the 18th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at No. 69 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick106 Rnd4 Anthony Belton
No drama and no debate, Anthony Belton went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick115 Rnd4 Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at pick No. 115 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick130 Rnd4 LeQuint Allen
They paid sticker price for LeQuint Allen in the 130th overall pick, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick144 Rnd5 R.J. Mickens
R.J. Mickens at the 144th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick217 Rnd7 Luke Lachey
A quiet steal in pick 217: Luke Lachey for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick220 Rnd7 Isaac TeSlaa
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaac TeSlaa a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick238 Rnd7 Hayden Conner
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Hayden Conner well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
