A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B-. The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Jalen Travis, 55 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Josh Simmons
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value.
Pick38
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
They talked themselves into Jayden Higgins at pick No. 38, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick45
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
They went early on Donovan Ezeiruaku in the 45th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69
Rnd3
Darien Porter
They took Darien Porter at par in the 69th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick77
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Andrew Mukuba. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick106
Rnd4
Dylan Fairchild
No drama and no debate, Dylan Fairchild went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 4. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick144
Rnd5
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton in slot 144 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick217
Rnd7
Kyle Monangai
A clean, defensible pick in Round 7, Pick 1 with a little surplus value in Kyle Monangai. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick220
Rnd7
Tahj Brooks
Steal is underselling it; Tahj Brooks at No. 220 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jalen Travis
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jalen Travis well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick238
Rnd7
Moliki Matavao
They left a pile of value on the table to take Moliki Matavao this early at pick No. 238. The roster fit checks out.
