FutureA+
Quarterback settled, Daniels in the fold, and a D+ for the Cowboys. The Cowboys spent real capital to be 80 picks early on J.J. Weaver, and the board is going to hold them to it. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Leaving linebacker unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, linebacker very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
In the 8th pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick35
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
They did well to land Troy Franklin in pick 35, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick56
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan in slot 56 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick71
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mekhi Wingo well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick87
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
Kingsley Suamataia at the 87th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick142
Rnd5
Isaiah Davis
Isaiah Davis at slot 142 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick173
Rnd5
Tykee Smith
Steal is underselling it; Tykee Smith at pick No. 173 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick213
Rnd6
Walter Rouse
They will replay Walter Rouse at Round 6, Pick 38 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick231
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
A wild overpay on J.J. Weaver in the 231st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick242
Rnd7
Garret Greenfield
They robbed the room for Garret Greenfield here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
