Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall C+
ValueB- NeedB TradesC- FutureB-
Flashes of a plan, unevenly run, for the Patriots: C+.

The Patriots torched the value chart for Zach Rice, taking him 119 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.

The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Getting Green where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They will answer for taking cornerback early while edge rusher and interior defensive lineman went begging.

Hit on Mansoor Delane and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Mansoor Delane
In the 30th overall pick they get a sticky cover corner at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick60 Rnd2 Nyck Harbor
No edge and no loss on Nyck Harbor in pick 60; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick92 Rnd3 Caleb Tiernan
A straight-up fair deal on Caleb Tiernan at slot 92, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick123 Rnd4 Chris Johnson
A want over a need in No. 123: Chris Johnson adds a cornerback while edge rusher and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Pick128 Rnd4 Bray Hubbard
A reach on Bray Hubbard in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick168 Rnd5 Tanner Koziol
Tanner Koziol in pick No. 168 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick193 Rnd6 Mark Fletcher Jr.
They went early on Mark Fletcher Jr. in pick 193, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick195 Rnd6 Jaren Kanak
Jaren Kanak at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick197 Rnd6 DeAndre Moore Jr.
They reached a country mile for DeAndre Moore Jr. at the 197th pick, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick206 Rnd6 Taylen Green
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Taylen Green in the 206th overall pick, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick242 Rnd7 Zach Rice
Zach Rice at pick No. 242 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
