Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall

FutureB+
A franchise passer in McCarthy headlines a B+ weekend for the Patriots. Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They banked enough surplus on Vaki to cover a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Corum pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In slot 22 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Pick23
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In the 23rd pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
Kool-Aid McKinstry in pick No. 27 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick34
Rnd2
Ladd McConkey
By-the-book stuff, Ladd McConkey at No. 34 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick76
Rnd3
Blake Corum
Blake Corum at Round 3, Pick 12 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick103
Rnd4
Malik Washington
Malik Washington at the 103rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick136
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Value with a capital V on Johnny Wilson in pick 136, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick180
Rnd6
Sione Vaki
The board fumbled Sione Vaki all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
