Good, not great, for the Patriots: B-. The war room fell hard for Tyler Onyedim, and it showed at the Round 6 slot: 58 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
That Haulcy pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The phones were busy but the ledger stayed level.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick63
Rnd2
Max Klare
A quiet steal in the 63rd pick: Max Klare for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick95
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick125
Rnd4
Jaeden Roberts
They let Jaeden Roberts come to them and pounced at slot 125. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick131
Rnd4
Malik Benson
No edge and no loss on Malik Benson in the 131st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick177
Rnd5
Tyren Montgomery
Good price on Tyren Montgomery in pick 177, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick189
Rnd6
Ephesians Prysock
Ephesians Prysock in No. 189 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick200
Rnd6
Dallen Bentley
Dallen Bentley at pick No. 200 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick207
Rnd6
Eric O'Neill
They reached into another round for Eric O'Neill, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick210
Rnd6
Jimmy Rolder
A reach on Jimmy Rolder in the Round 6 slot; the board had better options right there. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick215
Rnd6
Tyler Onyedim
Tyler Onyedim at the 215th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
By-the-book stuff, Trey Zuhn III at the 247th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
