Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
D+
ValueC
NeedB
TradesF
FutureA
The Patriots finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D+. The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending No. 192 on Jacob Dobbs a full 214 spots early. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The Pearsall steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
In the 10th pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Pick34
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
A clean, defensible pick in pick 34 with a little surplus value in Xavier Worthy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jonathon Brooks
They paid up for Jonathon Brooks at No. 42 when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick66
Rnd3
Jermaine Burton
Jermaine Burton at the 66th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick102
Rnd4
Spencer Rattler
Spencer Rattler in slot 102 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick103
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
The board had Dominick Puni higher than pick No. 103, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
Pick139
Rnd5
Cade Stover
Cade Stover at No. 139 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick180
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II at pick 180 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick192
Rnd6
Jacob Dobbs
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jacob Dobbs in the 192nd overall pick, miles early. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick198
Rnd6
Hayden Hatten
They talked themselves into Hayden Hatten at the 198th pick, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jordan Toles
A real head-scratcher, Jordan Toles in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jeremiah Walker
Jeremiah Walker in slot 214 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick215
Rnd6
Ricky Pearsall
They read the board right and Ricky Pearsall was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 40. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick216
Rnd6
Reuben Fatheree II
They liked Reuben Fatheree II enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 216. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick218
Rnd6
J.J. Weaver
J.J. Weaver at the 218th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick221
Rnd7
Jordan Jefferson
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jordan Jefferson. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick223
Rnd7
Isaiah Davis
Isaiah Davis at slot 223 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
