There is conviction, and then there is this. The Patriots took Donovan Smith a full 31 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That McMillan pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
