Draft Grade — Bears
Overall F
ValueB- NeedB- TradesF FutureF
Williams is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a F.

The Bears spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: DJ James, the No. 113 name on the board, in pick No. 185. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.

Steele has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.

Caleb Williams gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Spending an early pick on S-EDGE with interior defensive lineman and linebacker open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In pick No. 1 they get a true top target. A real need, handled.
Pick9 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In slot 9 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36 Rnd2 Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at slot 36 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick39 Rnd2 Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in No. 39 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick75 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick105 Rnd4 Dominick Puni
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at pick 105, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick111 Rnd4 Jalyx Hunt
Of all the spots to shop, they chose S-EDGE. Jalyx Hunt in pick No. 111 leaves interior defensive lineman and linebacker for later.
Pick123 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
This one needs a full-page explanation: Luke McCaffrey in Round 4, Pick 23, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick143 Rnd5 Theo Johnson
By-the-book stuff, Theo Johnson at the 143rd pick squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick181 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Frank Gore Jr. in the 181st overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick185 Rnd6 DJ James
DJ James at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick188 Rnd6 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
The board fumbled Zion Tupuola-Fetui all the way to No. 188, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick220 Rnd6 Matthew Jones
A real head-scratcher, Matthew Jones in pick 220 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick222 Rnd7 Brevyn Spann-Ford
No edge and no loss on Brevyn Spann-Ford in slot 222; it is a wash and a sensible one. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick224 Rnd7 Carson Steele
A wild overpay on Carson Steele in the 224th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
