The Jackson Slater selection is the head-turner. The Lions reached 19 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

Getting Nelson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
